Harvard University Triples Bitcoin Reserves: BTC ETFs Surge 257%

In recent years, Bitcoin has solidified its reputation as a highly profitable and frequently discussed asset, captivating a growing number of institutional investors. Particularly notable is the increased attention from large funds and universities by 2025, with Harvard University standing out as a prime example. Known globally as a leading institution, Harvard has made significant strides in the cryptocurrency domain. In early August, news broke about Harvard’s substantial stake in BlackRock’s spot Bitcoin ETF, signaling a major investment. The university’s financial documents for the third quarter further reveal a dramatic increase in its exposure to Bitcoin, marking a nearly threefold expansion since the previous quarter.

The Strategic Bitcoin Move: Harvard’s Significant Investment in BlackRock’s ETF

Harvard Ramps Up Its Bitcoin Investment

According to the latest 13F report filed by Harvard University, as of September 30, Harvard held 6.8 million shares in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), with a total market value of approximately $443 million. This strategic move fits into a broader investment strategy that also saw an increase in holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD), totaling over 661,000 shares valued at about $235 million during the third quarter of 2025.

The increase from 1.9 million IBIT shares reported at the end of June to 6.8 million by September represents an impressive growth of 257%. Presently, BlackRock’s ETF has become the most significant single investment among Harvard’s official holdings. Despite the fact that this investment is relatively modest when compared to Harvard’s massive endowment of around $57 billion, it is significant enough to place the university among the top 16 holders of the ETF. This move underscores the growing acceptance of Bitcoin as a reserve asset by major institutions.

Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas remarked, “It is quite rare for a university endowment to invest in an ETF, especially prestigious ones like Harvard or Yale. This is the highest form of endorsement an ETF can receive. Although half a billion represents just 1% of their total assets, it’s substantial enough to rank them among the largest IBIT holders.”

Challenges for BlackRock Amid High Outflows

Despite growing institutional interest like Harvard’s, U.S. Bitcoin ETFs are experiencing lackluster weeks. Recently, funds recorded net outflows of approximately $1.1 billion. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust prominently led this trend, witnessing three consecutive days of withdrawals. According to data from SoSoValue, $463.1 million was withdrawn on Friday, November 14 alone. Nevertheless, IBIT remains the largest spot Bitcoin ETF on the market, managing assets nearing $75 billion.
